Tours & Tastings

Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Every Saturday the Southern Star Brewery in Conroe opens for tours and it brings lots of friendly faces and friendly folks.

It's a simple equation for the folks at Southern Star, if you brew it, they will come.

"Beer is a great social lubricant,' joked Rob Martin sales and marketing director for Southern Star.

"I knew we were going to drink beer so I got in the car for that," joked beer fan Camille McLeod.

"You come out here and come mingle with some people and get some free beer. You can't go wrong there," said visitor and former NASA engineer Marcus Schimek.

"It's you and your closest 200 or 300 friends," joked beer fan Jeffrey Johnson.

The brewery brings out beer fans from all over southeast Texas as Texans expand their pallets and get a taste for craft beer.

"Texas is king when it comes to the light lager beers that are out there, so the market is ripe for local beer," said Martin.

"We like different flavors here in Texas,' said McLeod.

From the Bombshell Blonde to the Buried Hatchet Stout, Southern Star prides itself on making beer for the beer connoisseur and the first timers.

"You'd be surprised how many people say they don't like dark and then once they try the stout, they're like wow this is really good. It's not what I was expecting," said Martin.

Owner Dave Fougeron happens to be an Aggie so when it came time to can his first beer, the Pine Belt Pale Ale, the color of the can was an easy decision. Maroon.

"Texas A&M class of 2010," said McLeod of her Aggie roots.

As it turns out, there are a lot of Aggies both behind the scenes and behind the bubbles of the beer.

"Class of 80," said Johnson.

"We're Aggie parents," said Schimek.

And Aggies know how to party.

"We know great beer, I mean College Station is known for its beer drinking," joked Johnson.

"As you can see it's a pretty convivial atmosphere," joked Schimek.

Southern Star is the 6th largest producer of Texas craft beer brewing 8,000 barrels a year or close to 250,000 gallons.

"Our brewers have a lot of passion for what they do. They work really hard to produce the best quality beer that they possibly can brew," said Martin.

And that's brought in quite a following in a matter of a few years.

"It easy to get to but we don't want too many of you to come. As you can see, it's already crowded," joked Schimek.

Braving the crowd and the heat to get a taste at the Southern Star Brewery, one stop worth a sip on our Brazos Valley Bucket List.

The Southern Star Brewery is open every Saturday from 1 to 3 in the afternoon and guests are treated to three free samples.

Keep in mind the brewery is not climate controlled so during the summer, it can be very warm so dress appropriately.
