Brazos County Jail Passes Surprise Inspection

A surprise inspection visit to the Brazos County jail, and it passes with flying colors.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards conducted a 2-day inspection of the Brazos County Detention Center on Sandy Point Road in Bryan.

Sheriff Chris Kirk on Wednesday said the jail passed all state jail standards and is recommended to get a certificate of compliance.

The Brazos County Sheriff's Office says this inspection was a milestone because it's the first annual inspection since the new jail opened in September of 2010.

At that time the Sheriff's Office says it embraced a new strategy of direct supervision in which a detention officer is assigned to a post within a 64-bed dorm-style cell.

The Brazos County jail currently has a capacity of 1,088 inmates.

The Sheriff's Office employs 168 staff to operate the jail and has an annual budget of $10.4 million for jail operations.
