Chet Edwards' three previous election wins in District 17 followed very similar trends, ones that Bill Flores completely bucked in winning the U.S. House seat Tuesday night.

Flores earned 62 percent of the 171,988 votes cast in the district. Edwards only pulled in 37 percent, ending his 20-year stint in Congress.

In the 2004, 2006 and 2008 elections where Edwards won, Johnson and Hood Counties at the far north end of the district always ended up in the GOP column. Somervell County, also to the north, ended up with a majority of votes for Republican candidates two of the three years. Edwards only has lost one other county in one other election: Grimes in 2004.

But Flores painted almost all of the district red Tuesday, winning every county but Robertson. Even there, Edwards only got 52 percent of the votes. Robertson has never voted less than 68 percent in an election for Edwards.

Robertson is one of the smaller counties when it comes to turnout. The biggest five counties -- McLennan, Brazos, Johnson, Hood and Hill -- made up 86 percent of the votes in District 17.

Johnson and Hood each topped the 70 percent mark in favor of Flores. Brazos and Hill were each more than 60 percent for the Republican.

And then there's McLennan -- nearly a third of the overall votes, and a county more than any other that Edwards has relied on. In 2004, his win there won him the election over Arlene Wohlgemuth Tuesday night, Chet Edwards lost his home county, as Flores captured 52 percent.
