A Bryan woman and her ex-husband have been sentenced for staging a robbery to cover up stealing money from a local restaurant.

In 2008, police say 46-year-old Kami Manuel worked at the Wingstop in College Station and stole thousands of dollars.

This week she and her ex-husband pleaded guilty to faking the robbery. Investigators tell us when police to the robbery in August 2008, they really thought an employee was being held up at gunpoint.

After interviewing employees including the owner, investigators found out Kami Manuel was not the victim, but a suspect.

Kami was a former manager at the Wingstop according to police.

Investigators say she confessed to stealing about $25,000 over a period of about five months in 2008 by taking money that was supposed to be deposited at the end of the day.

Police say she confessed to plotting a robbery with her ex-husband, 53-year-old James Charles Manuel from Bryan, to cover up the crime.

"She says she needed it for medical bills and things like that, so she had been slowly taking the money out of the safe. The owner started noticing. The owner gave her an ultimatum that you need to make the deposits,” said Chief Brandy Norris, with the College Station Police Department.

Investigators say a short time later, the robbery was staged.

Police say Kami's ex-husband entered the restaurant and pointed a gun at her demanding money. She emptied out the safe.

"Secret service came in to do the polygraph, and in the pre-polygraph interview she ended up confessing prior to the polygraph even occurring,” said Norris.

Kami confessed to plotting the whole thing to make it seem like all the money was taken during the robbery.

This week she was given 120 days in jail and 10 years probation.

Her ex-husband got 15 years in jail for aggravated robbery. The Brazos County District Attorney's office says his charge was enhanced because of a previous conviction. He served some time in prison for being an accomplice of a murder back in 1985.
