BRYAN - A former local dentist has entered a guilty plea to a charge that he recorded a female employee changing clothes at his office without her knowing it.
William Birdwell is scheduled to turn himself in on August 5 for 21 days in the Brazos County Jail. In addition, he will be on probation for four years, and be required to do 80 hours of community service and undergo a psychological evaluation.
If Birdwell, 67, were to violate the terms of his probation, he would spend two years behind bars.
On May 21, an employee at his dentist office in Bryan was changing clothes because she was going to the gym. She said she found a video camera hidden in the room and called police. The video showed Birdwell setting up the camera and leaving the room prior to the employee changing. A second video of that same employee changing was also on the device.
Birdwell initially denied the allegation to police, but later admitted to setting up the camera.
"The defendant used his place of business to record an unsuspecting employee in her most private moments," Brazos County District Attorney Jarvis Parsons said in a statement Thursday following the sentencing. "When any person commits such an egregious violation of the law, there must be serious consequences."
In the days following his arrest on the Improper Visual Recording charge, the prominent dentist honored for his work in the community voluntarily surrendered his dental license and resigned from the Board of Dental Examiners for the state.
