The spirit of College Football is in the air and many local events across the Brazos Valley have been centered around home games. Fill the Boot fundraiser for the Bryan Fire Department was no exception.
You may recall the College Station Fire Department held their Fill the Boot fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the Aggie's season opener against Rice. Bryan Firefighters had a similar idea and decided to hold their event during the weekend of one of the biggest college football games: #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide versus #6 Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field. Bryan Firefighter Marc Murchison with Station #2 said the traffic was even heavier than they anticipated; while the generosity of drivers was unbelieveable.
The fundraiser happens every year among all fire departments across the country. Firefighters stand on various street corners, asking drivers to fill their boot with cash, which is then donated to the MDA. The finds go towards research, as well as sending kids and teens affected by some type of muscular dystrophy condition to a summer camp. The fundraiser is geared towards helping kids while also raising awareness.
In addition to all the giving, Bryan and College Station firefighters keeps things interesting, as both crews aim to raise more funds than the other.
"We both do this every year," said Murchison. "I think they've been in the lead for the past two years and I think we won a few years back; but we're trying to get in the lead, but they did a really good job already."
Bryan Firefighters have raised more than $140,000 collectively in years past for MDA.
