Thanks to the generosity of donors throughout the Brazos Valley, private citizens and corporations alike, the Bryan ISD Education Foundation has awarded $50,000 in teacher grants—the largest annual grant distribution in the Foundation’s history.
The competitive grants were awarded based on their ability to make a positive impact on education for as many students as possible.
The Foundation supplied in excess of $40,000 of the grants, with Citibank contributing another $10,000 toward the cause of enhancing education in the classroom.
Foundation board members joined Executive Director Sandra Davis and fanned out to 20 schools throughout the district Tuesday to award grants and surprise excited teachers and students.
“We’re very grateful to the campuses and teachers who applied for these competitive grants, and we’re especially thankful to the donors who made $50,000 in grants possible this year,” Davis said. “The applications this year were especially well-written, and we’re so pleased to help put projects in place that will help a lot of students.
Teachers were awarded grants after submitting applications and going through a grant review process that included Foundation board members. Among the projects the committee funded were:
• Empowered Learning in a Flipped Classroom—purchasing of DVD players with instructional DVDs to serve as resources in the modern “flipped classroom,” a concept that involves learning at home and practical application of that learning in the classroom.
• Speed Graph Materials—helping students make sense of graphs as mathematical representations of real world situations. The activity ties physical motion to a graph and helps students make sense of gathering data and representing it with mathematics using a chart.
• Map It!—a project using document cameras to project interactive learning in geography classes.
Other funded projects include an iPod listening station to allow 2-4 kindergarten students to listen to listen and read simultaneously and also a project that subscribes to databases that allow students to learn, understand and begin to practice research practices and strategies.
