Twenty years ago, an organization opened its doors to a part of the community hurt most by drugs and poverty. Now, two decades on, Save Our Streets Ministries is turning lives around. But it wasn't always an easy road to travel.
"'Know the truth and the truth will set you free,'" said J.J. Ramirez, the founder of Save Our Streets Ministries in Bryan. "That's my favorite scripture."
Ramirez said John 8:32 saved his life.
"I will never forget it," Ramirez said. Twenty years ago, he was a drug dealer and a user, but he wanted to change. "The most desperate thing I could do was open up the Bible, but I didn't know it; I've never read it."
It was Christian Rock concert that changed Ramirez's life. He said it's where Jesus spoke to him.
"And I heard freedom," he said.
Ramirez reaches out to underprivileged kids on a daily basis at S.O.S. Ministries. The ministry is located on Bryan's west side of town where the majority of crimes happen. Now, they are trying to fix that for good.
Johnny Alvarado is just one person whose life was changed by Ramirez. "I was just pouring my heart out to him on how I have made a lot of mistakes and made some bad decisions, even while I was walking with the Lord," Alvarado said.
He said Ramirez's kindness allowed him to believe that the Lord will still love him, despite his addiction to drugs.
"That was the grace of God being restored in my life; through J.J.," said Alvarado.
For 20 years, Ramirez and the S.O.S. Ministries have been working to save lives across the Brazos Valley and the state one soul at a time.
"We've seen God do some great things," Ramirez said.
