BRYAN, Texas -- December 2013 sales tax collected in the City of Bryan totaled $1,653,608, which is $193,476 or 13.25 percent above budget for the month.
This represents an increase of $214,332 or 14.89 percent collected in December 2012. Year to date sales tax collections are above budget by $319,243 or 8.31 percent.
Hotel occupancy tax collections for December 2013 totaled $61,143, representing an increase of $17,469 or 40 percent compared to the same period last year.
"The sales tax figure is particularly good," said Joe Hegwood, Chief Finance Officer for the City of Bryan and BTU. "Unfortunately, the State gives us very little detailed information about trends or drivers relative to the collections. We have contacted the State Comptroller's Office in an effort to gain more information. It is definitely a sign of a healthy, robust community."
The State Comptroller's Office has been working to develop an online portal that will provide local entities with more detailed information.
