Bryan City Council Reviewing Ethics Policies

The Bryan City Council is taking a look at itself, and rethinking some of the ethical guidelines the council follows. It's all in an effort to make the relationship between the council and citizens better and more transparent.

“It's how we react and act towards the citizens of Bryan,” said Art Hughes, Bryan City Council.

Councilman Hughes is one of two council members working on reviewing and writing new policies. Councilman Mike Southerland is the other.

"We'll develop the policy. We'll give it to the city attorney. Once she figures out what is yes and no then we'll give it to the council,” said Southerland.

What the new ethical policy addresses is still in the works, but council members are already talking about what they would like to see.

“We want to reduce the number of people that are related to you that can be on our committees,” said Southerland.

One change that could affect the council is interaction between the council and members of the community.

“How we conduct ourselves with each other on the council, with citizens, consultants, with anyone who calls us or addresses us,” said Hughes.

Mayor Jason Bienski wants a review of ethical policies dealing with Executive Session.

"Well that's the main one. That's the whole purpose of talking about the issues was potential leaks and information that would come out of executive session."

Bienski didn't say who the violators were or when the leaks occurred, but state law already mandates Council Members are not allowed to discuss what happens in the closed door meetings. For now, no action is being taken on ethical policies as the two men appointed to review them were given no time limit to present their findings to the council.
