Bush Library Closes Due to Government Shutdown

TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY As expected, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is closed due to the shutdown of the federal government.

Tuesday marked the first day of the first shutdown in 17 years, and non-essential government personnel have been furloughed as a result.

A small note on the front door of the library complex notes the closing, and a notice is posted on its website.

"Due to the Federal Government shutdown, all National Archives facilities are closed, with the exception of the Federal Records Centers and the Federal Register," it reads. "Learn more about our status. Check USA.gov for updates on the status of the Federal government."

Library officials said they could not confirm the library's closure in the lead-up to the shutdown. The National Archives and Records Administration also declined to state whether it would happen in the days prior, but said previous government shutdowns included Archives museums.

The Bush Library is arguably the biggest year-round tourist attraction in the region. Open since 1997 on the campus of Texas A&M, it is normally only closed a handful of days each year.
