COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After 22 years with the College Station Police Department and five years as its chief, Jeff Capps will soon trade in his title for a new one.
"It's obviously a great opportunity for me," said Capps. "I'm looking forward to the new challenges."
Capps' last day at his desk will be June 30, but he won't be going far. In his new role as Assistant City Manager, Capps will oversee the police department, fire department, emergency operations, and a few other city departments.
"I've spent a lot of time thinking bout this, praying about it," said Capps. "I think it will be a good move for me."
In his place, at least for now, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum will serve as interim chief. A challenge McCollum said he's ready for.
"I'll probably have to become more versed in some of the projects where I just had a basic understanding of, but I feel we have a very talented staff," said McCollum.
Capps won't say much about potential changes, other than there are no major personnel changes planned, and some promotions could be coming soon.
"We're blessed with a very good staff that we've worked hard in those last couple of years to develop that," said Capps. "So you're going to have some people that will have the opportunity to step up into some key leadership roles."
No word yet on how long it will take for the city to appoint a new police chief.
Following stints at the Brazos County Attorney's Office and the Texas A&M Police Department, he joined CSPD in 1993, earning promotions along the way, including to Assistant Chief in 2008. In 2009 when Chief Michael Ikner resigned to return to Arlington PD as its chief, Capps became the interim chief, then was given the job on a permanent basis.
Currently, College Station's police department has 183 employees.
Capps, who has a wife and son, is a Sam Houston State graduate.
