Caldwell Police Chief Danny McElroy stepped down Tuesday afternoon hours before the city council would decide his future with the department.

Johnny Price, the City Administrator, said the police department was also under investigation before he turned in his letter of resignation. Price said McElroy "left on his own" with a notice and would enter retirement as of Tuesday.

McElroy had been with the Caldwell Police Department for 21 years, where he served as chief for the past three years.
