The Calvert Police Department in Robertson County is now down to three officers after Chief Nancy Juvrud resigned Friday. Juvrud left the job after just three and a half years. She says she has been thinking about resigning for more than a year. "This gives me an opportunity to do some things that I have not had the opportunity to do. Go some places I need to go and do some things I need to do and keep this as my home base."
Juvrud reflected on her nearly 30 years in law enforcement, starting out in College Station. When she took over as the police chief in 2011, the former chief and all the police officers except for one had left the department. All Juvrud says she wanted to do when she got here... was serve the people. "I wanted to come in and do some good and make sure everyone was treated fairly and justly. If I've helped one person in Calvert it's been worth it."
During her nearly four years as chief, she assisted in programs giving children in Calvert a gift at Christmas time and lead the charge in Operation Crackdown, knocking down suspected drug houses and turning some into gardens. She also boasts a crime rate that has dropped two-thirds from what it was when she started.
Since her resignation Friday, Juvrud says she hasn't heard from Mayor Marcus Greaves. Despite rumors that there was tension between the two, Greaves says he wishes her well 'I had no problems with the chief, and I wish her well in her endeavors and what she's going to do."
Juvrud says she plans to spend with her family and looks forward to the next chapter in her life.
The search for a new chief has already begun. Officer Mike Hoyt will take over as interim chief. The person expected to replace him could be in place by next week.
