Canoe of Missing CS Native, Aggie Found on Spokane River

Authorities in Spokane, Washington have found the canoe of a College Station native, Texas A&M graduate and Air Force airman who went missing on the Spokane River.

Airman First Class James Adam Lassiter went missing March 31. Search crews have been combing a 30-mile stretch of the river, but had been unable to find the 26-year-old, though search efforts at times have been hampered by rough conditions on the river that likely claimed Lassiter.

According to KREM television in Spokane, his canoe was found Tuesday four feet underwater and impaled against a bridge. A backpack with his name on it was inside.

More than 40 volunteers searched along the river Tuesday. The Spokane County Sheriff's Office told News 3 formal search efforts had been called off, and that Lassiter would be considered "missing" until his body is found.

The Air Force has visited with Lassiter's parents in College Station, informing them the airman is considered dead and offering condolences.

Lassiter grew up in College Station, went on to Texas A&M, where he graduated with honors. He was part of the Corps of Cadets while at A&M. He was married, and one of eight siblings.
