Carville, Matalin Talk Politics at Bush Library

Updated: Fri 11:31 PM, Feb 24, 2012

Political power couple Mary Matalin and James Carville were in town this evening to offer their diverse perspectives.

As you might expect, the two tossed a few barbs at each other on stage, but it was a night filled with many lines of political thought.

With a recent debate in the books, the Republican Matalin said the volume of debates was hurting the current field, at least in the short term. She harkened back to when George H.W. Bush was running for president, saying the only time she ever saw "President Poppy" upset was when he was preparing for a debate.

She said once it got down to a Republican against President Obama, things would be better, but now, according to the Democrat Carville, "it's not going very well. It's just not."

Carville proclaimed Mitt Romney was the only Republican in the field of contenders that could defeat the current president.

But again, Matalin harkened back to 1992 to show that anything can happen, like a Bush loss to a relative unknown.

When asked how new media had changed things in politics today, Carville said he doesn't believe people today know any more than they did 50 years ago, and that they'll still gravitate to what they want to hear.
