The Bryan City Council will take a look at its interim city manager Tuesday, along with the power structure for the place where he used to work.
During a closed-door portion of Tuesday's meeting, Kean Register's job status is slated to be reviewed. He's held the interim city manager title for 19 months and is believed to have wide-spread support from the council.
But as News 3 reported last week, Register's top-level position at BTU was eliminated and he was not reassigned. That decision was reportedly made by the power provider's general manager, Dan Wilkerson, but the city council will also be looking at whether to take back authority to hire and fire BTU personnel.
In 2001 after a charter change provided the option, Acting City Manager Hugh Walker delegated the power to appoint and remove employees to BTU's board, which then gave that power to Wilkerson. Eleven years later, the city council will look at repealing that change and give personnel decisions back to the city manager. The memo is linked below.
Councilmembers Mike Southerland and Richard Cortez submitted the agenda item.
A vote on the first reading of the ordinance is slated for Tuesday's meeting. A second could take place Wednesday at a special meeting of the council.
