College Station Police-Fire Communications will honor the men and women who serve as public safety dispatchers and call takers during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, April 14–20, 2013.
Across the nation in times of intense personal crisis and community-wide disasters the primary access point for those seeking all classes of emergency services and homeland security information is 9-1-1. The state, local and county public safety communications centers who receive these calls have emerged as the first and single point of contact for persons seeking immediate relief during an emergency.
Every day, millions of people depend on the skill, expertise and commitment of the men and women who work in public safety telecommunications. These individuals help save countless lives by responding to emergency calls, dispatching emergency professionals and equipment and providing moral support to citizens in distress. In addition to answering emergency calls most operators also field questions relating to all types of complaints, all the while juggling priorities to serve the public in the best and fastest way possible. These behind the scenes, seemingly nameless and faceless individuals make the difference between life and death in many instances.
Next week we are honoring our dispatch and call-taking personnel with a special thank you for all the hard, dedicated work they do each day, all year round. On Thursday evening the College Station City Council adopted a proclamation designating next week as National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week in the City of College Station in honor of the men and women whose diligence and professionalism keep our city and citizens safe.
