Local firefighters are arming kids with the tools they need to make it through a life threatening situation as part of National Fire Prevention Week.

Kids learn the importance of escaping a fire from those who know best: firefighters.

"Because fire might be on your clothes, you need to just stop drop and roll, " said Georgia.

Officials use a fire alarm as a tool to keep kids sharp and on their toes..

They're shown how a fire alarm works and the steps to take after it beeps. The beeping sound you hear when an alarm goes off is when you should remember to get outside.

Kids go through the motions of reacting to a fire which can happen at anytime, especially when they're sleeping.

After lying down, they get up on their hands and knees, test a door to make sure it's not hot and they have a way to escape the room. Then they crawl to safety and call 9-1-1 to get help.

Deputy Fire Marshall Raymond Olson has a passion that's second nature.

"We're here to make a difference and help them to get through what they need to get through," said Olson.

I asked 1st grader Jason, "So now when you see firefighters, what do you think?"

He said, "I think they're a great help to everyone in the universe."

Kids learn a lesson that could save their lives and those around them.

The National Fire Protection Association says last year one person died almost every three hours from a fire.
