In an effort to facilitate a virtual neighborhood watch program and help foster neighbor-to-neighbor communications, the College Station Police Department has partnered with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), a private social network for neighborhoods that is free to all users.
This valuable community resource has been in use locally for approximately one year, and is currently active in 40 neighborhoods with over 900 local homes.
The city has been segmented into 76 geographic neighborhoods, each of which can utilize its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website. This site, controlled by that neighborhood’s website founder, is accessible only to verified residents of that area. Residents can then use their website to get to know their neighbors, ask questions, and exchange local advice and recommendations.
Information shared on Nextdoor is only visible to verified members. The College Station Police Department will be able to post important information to these neighborhood websites, such as crime updates, as well as receive information from citizens in situations that do not require an immediate response. The College Station Police Department will not be able to access the resident’s websites, contact information, or content.
The site can also be utilized as a virtual neighborhood watch tool where residents can exchange information with one another and the police department regarding activity in their neighborhood. College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps said “The increased communication facilitated by this community resource will help us to accomplish our goals of reducing crime and the fear of crime as well as help us to create and maintain effective partnerships with our citizens.” Residents will still be encouraged to contact the police department either through dispatch (979-764-3600) for non-emergency matters, or through the use of 911 if an emergency is believed to exist.
Information about this new program can be found through the Nextdoor website, or contacting the College Station Police Department Community Enhancement Unit at 979-764-3624.
