DWI Cases Up In Bryan This New Year's Eve

Drunk driving arrests in Bryan shot up Monday night as revelers rang in the New Year.

And local law enforcement agencies were ready.

You've heard it many times; "Drink, drive, go to, jail," and over the last few days Bryan Police Officers have been pulling suspected drunk drivers off the streets.

There are many ways to celebrate the New Year and it can also be a dangerous night on the roads for drunk driving.

Victoria Thompson of Bryan was enjoying this New Year's day Downtown.

"Happy New Year!," she cheered.

Her tradition is staying at home and off the streets New Year's Eve.

"Always. Um the last time that I did anything to celebrate New Year's it was a party with a bunch of sober people and we played games, we had music, danced, we celebrated the New Year," said Thompson.

But that's not the case for everybody.

In Bryan seven people were arrested New Year's Eve while it was just one the same evening last year.

11 people have been arrested for DWI in Bryan since December 29th.

"We did have additional officers out on the streets for the New Year's," said Sergeant Benson Kilgore of Bryan P.D.

Kilgore was unaware of any DWI-related accidents or injuries in town overnight. In recent months they've made providing a breath test or blood sample mandatory.

"It is now our policy that if we have the probable cause to believe that they are intoxicated, if the subject does refuse to provide a specimen of breath or blood, then we will seek a search warrant for the blood," said Kilgore.

Victoria Thompson supports the program, but will continue to celebrate with a low profile.

"I watch it on TV instead of get out in the freezing cold and fighting the crowds," she said.

College Station Police tell us they had around four arrests for DWI from the 29th of December until New Year's Day 2013.
