A big night, Wednesday, over at Sam Houston State University.
Dan Rather returned to his alma mater. The 1954 graduate spent the day talking with students about his time on campus and his career at CBS News and now with HD Net.
He also talked about what problems professional journalists face today.
"I think the standards in journalism are down as a whole; print, electronic journalism, both," explained Rather.
"That the increased size of the competitive arena has led to this lowering of standards. All of us, and I do not exclude myself in this criticism have a lot to answer for it."
In a new tradition at SHSU, Rather signed the wall in the new Performing Arts Center.
He simply left the word "courage."
Wednesday's event was a part of the Mingling with Media series at Sam Houston State. It was planned and organized entirely by public relations majors.
