Dangerous Road Conditions Due To Wet Weather

The rainy weather is welcomed in the parched parts of Brazos Valley, but road conditions due to the wet weather don't get the same reception.

"It's wet, and you can't take those chances," said Willie McMurray who knows about the dangers of driving on wet highways.

His truck was hit when another driver lost control. Now he's extra cautious.

"On my car lengths, on a normal day I probably give two car lengths, but on a wet day like this maybe 3 or 3.5 car lengths. I just drive defensively because you never know what the other driver is doing," said McMurray.

The Texas Department of Transportation says flooding is the leading cause of weather-related crashes in Texas.

"There's oil and moisture and things that get onto the roadway, and your traction is not as good as it is on dry pavement. That's the reason we ask people to please slow down and allow a little extra time wherever you are going," said Bob Colwell, with TXDOT.

Using cruise control should not be an option when driving on the highway when it's raining according to TXDOT because it's harder to slow down or take control of your vehicle incase it skids.

"You never know what's going to happen so just take your time out here and be safe," said McMurray.

TXDOT advises drivers to visit their website to find up to date road conditions so you can map out the safest route to your destination.
