On Wednesday, June 5th, 2013 at 9:50AM thirty-six year old Laketh Bernard McKinney Sr. was arrested on a warrant for Civil Rights Violation - Person in Custody / Sexual Contact. At the time of the offense McKinney was serving as a Detention Officer for the Brazos County Sheriff's Office.
On May 9th, Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk initiated an internal investigation following the report that Detention Officer McKinney was bringing contraband into the jail facility. In the course of the investigation additional violations of Sheriff's Office Policy & Procedure including criminal conduct by McKinney were uncovered.
Sheriff’s Investigators found evidence that McKinney was involved in an intimate relationship with a male inmate in the custody at the Brazos County Jail. Phone calls from a jail phone to McKinney's cell phone and letters between McKinney and the inmate indicate they were involved in an intimate physical relationship. In an interview with Sheriff's investigators, the inmate admitted to having sexual contact with McKinney while in jail.
Thirty-six year old LaKeth B. McKinney Sr. had been a Detention Officer since April, 2011. McKinney was suspended with pay on Friday, May 31st while the investigation continued. The warrant was issued this morning. Sheriff's Office Jail Administrator met with McKinney, terminated his employment and turned McKinney over to Sheriff's Investigators to make the arrest.
Violation of Civil Rights of Person in Custody by Sexual Contact is a State Jail Felony. McKinney’s bond was set at $10,000 by Justice of the Peace Munoz.
