BRYAN, Texas - Some big changes could be on the way to an area of Downtown Bryan that's been left mostly ignored.
The area along Main Street, north of East 23rd to Martin Luther King Junior Street is mostly empty fields and vacant buildings.
Developing firm BCS Modern Living recently purchased the old Parker Lumber building off Main Street and 22nd. The firm plans to make major repairs to the building, including a new roof, then move their offices into the back of the building. The front section of the building will be leased for retail and office space.
The developer wants to revitalize north downtown Bryan, but not by focusing on new businesses. Instead, the developer wants to bring in mixed-use residential development, or apartments with retail spaces on the bottom.
"As more people move into a city and reside there, they start using the services," said Rene Lawrence with BCS Modern Living. "They start going to the cafes and attending functions, and going to the different businesses that are there."
Lawrence said it could take about five years to get the first mixed-use building up and going.
