BRYAN - A Bryan Firefighter who died last year from injuries he received trying to rescue a fellow firefighter will be awarded for his courage.
Lieutenant Gregory Pickard, a 32 year veteran of the department, died in February of last year from injuries sustained while serving on a rapid intervention team. The group went in to the burning Knights of Columbus Hall to recover another Lieutenant who radioed he'd needed help. Pickard died from his injuries.
His family will receive the Ray Downey Courage and Valor award at the Fire Department Instructors' Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis on April 9, 2014. It is given to those who go to extraordinary efforts to help others through heroic actions.
FDIC organizers say the Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award commemorates the life and career achievements of Deputy Chief Ray Downey, who lost his life while commanding rescue operations at the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001
A final report detailing the Knights of Columbus fire is due out sometime in April from the State Fire Marshall's Office.
