Two left homeless after Hearne house fire

HEARNE, Texas A house fire in Hearne left two people without a home early Monday morning.

Investigators said the fire broke out around 5 at a home on Alamo near 3rd. Street.

Charles Williams, 76, said he's been living in the home for more than 30 years and was awake when the fire broke out. He managed to get out with only the clothes on his back. He said he's not sure what he'll do next.

It took volunteer fire crews from Hearne and Calvert about two hours to knock out the flames. Officer Randal Barrow with the Hearne Police Department said the old, wooden house was the perfect fuel for a fire.

"Everything just got real hot, real fast," said Barrow. "The whole thing is wood, and it gets underneath the floors. It just gets real hot, real fast and it's hard to put out."

Ramona Tucker said her father, Raymond, 79, also lives at the home. She said when she heard the news, she rushed to the home to make sure everything was alright.

"I thought my father was in the house," said Tucker. "I kept telling the police and the fire department to keep looking."

Tucker said she eventually jumped in the car with her cousin and started searching for any sign of her father.

"And when we went around the corner, there he was," Tucker said. "And I ran to him crying and I said, daddy, you had me worried. I thought that you were in the house and that you were gone."

Fire crews returned to the house throughout the day to make sure the fire was out for good.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials said they don't suspect foul play.
