The State Fire Marshal is investigating a string of suspicious fires in Calvert. In one month, five homes have been destroyed while displacing more than a dozen people.

For a town trying to reinvent itself, the vibrant reflection of crime scene tape beaming across a pool of standing water in front of a home on Gregg Street is one that the city of Calvert is trying to dissolve.

In one month five homes in Calvert have been plagued by fire. It all began on February 18th where two homes at the Federal Housing Complex on the west side went up in flames. Seven people were displaced. Two weeks later, at the same complex, apartment number 818 and 820 would be next. Just before 8:30 Sunday night, the yellow home sitting at the corner of Gregg and Church Street caught fire.

Zeke Bermudez of the Calvert Fire Department captured cell phone footage of flames ripping through the roof. He says no one was inside at the time and the fire was contained just after ten p.m.

The fire at the vacant home is the latest casualty that has many residents on high alert. In fact, it's even caught the attention of the State Fire Marshal in an effort to find out whether or not the cause of the fire was intentional.

“It just seemed an inopportune time; it was an abandoned home and no one was living there that we know of, and there were no utilities to the house,” said Nancy Juvrud, Calvert Chief of Police.

Juvrud says she expects to have results in from the State Fire Marshal this week.
