Former Daycare Worker Arrested in Bryan Baby Injury Case

BRYAN A former Bryan daycare employee will now face charges after a child that had reportedly been in her care suffered serious injuries.

Freddie Walton, 53, turned herself into authorities Tuesday afternoon on charges of endangering a child by omission. She posted a $3,000 bond and was released shortly after being booked into the Brazos County jail. A warrant had been issued Monday, according to Bryan Police.

Walton, a Bryan resident, is accused in the September 17 injury of then-five-month-old Lincoln Shumbera, who was in the care of Walton at the Camelot Learning Center, according to BPD.

Shumbera suffered a brain bleed, concussion and skull fracture, and was taken to Dell Children's Hospital in Austin for treatment. After treatment, the child, his 21 stitches in his head, and his parents went home on September 23.

Daycare officials told News 3 at the time that the caregiver, who was not identified at the time, had told police she accidentally dropped the baby. The officials say the caregiver was let go as a result.

A police report backs up that account. It reads Walton was interviewed by police the night of the incident, and had claimed she heard Shumbera crying, then saw the child had rolled into a table, his head resting against it. Police say Walton told them the child was bleeding, and that he vomited throughout the day.

Based on interviews with other staff members and suspicious that the story didn't match the injuries the child had suffered, police asked Walton to take a polygraph on September 19. Walton reportedly failed the test, and in a follow-up interview, admitted to dropping the child from her lap as she stood up.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services recently cited Camelot for "failing to ensure that no child is abused, neglected, or exploited," according to a spokesperson for DFPS.
