The mother of a Texas A&M student and former Yell Leader candidate accused of stealing two bikes says it was an honest mistake

Police say Samantha Ketcham is behind the theft of two bikes. She was arrested Sunday after a bait bike was stolen from the bike rack south of Underwood Hall. According to police, investigators found the bikes in Ketcham's room at Mosher Hall. The arrest report states that Ketcham told police she and another individual took the bike.

Ketcham became well-known after she tried to break Texas A&M tradition by being elected the first female yell leader. Ketcham was not elected.

Cheryl Ketcham says her daughter thought she was picking up friends' bikes and was trying to help them by taking the bicycles to her dorm.

Samantha Ketcham is back home in Virginia and was too distraught to talk to News 3 about her arrest.

Ketcham has been charged with two counts of theft, a class B misdemeanor. The case has been turned over to the county attorney's office.

In order to combat stolen bikes, UPD has been placing bait bikes around the campus and tracking them.
