Former Aggie Football Player to Run for State Representative

Former Aggie Football player Seth McKinney announced today he will run for Representative Fred Brown's vacant seat as a Republican in a special election in November.

McKinney, who is now in public finance in Bryan-College Station, played 8 years in the NFL after a stellar career at Texas A&M as a lineman from 1998 to 2001.

He's also the son of outgoing Texas A&M System Chancellor Mike McKinney.

He told News 3 that he thinks he'll make a good lawmaker because of his vested interest in public education.

"Public school finance is one of the things that, you know, really hits home for me. I have 3 children in College Station I.S.D, or 2 children in College Station I.S.D., one's going to be there next year, also make 3. But that's something I care about deeply, the welfare of the school children, not only in the state, but our area."

McKinney says he doesn't think his dad's ties to Governor Rick Perry will have an adverse effect on him running for office.

Former Brazos County Tax Assessor/Collector Buddy Winn also says he plans to run for that seat.

Bryan Mayor Jason Bienski says he is considering an announcement in a week or two.
