Former CS Councilmember Dead at 81

Former College Station city councilmember Dick Birdwell died Wednesday of heart failure.

The 81-year-old served on the council from 1988 to 1992, and again from 1996 to 1998. He made an unsuccessful run for mayor in 2002.

Birdwell was active in the city outside of his elected stints. He was on the cemetery board and an alternate member of the zoning board of adjustments. Up until a few weeks ago, he had been on the sunset advisory board, but had stepped down due to health reasons.

According to a bio on the Aggie Network website, Birdwell was an A&M Consolidated graduate who went on to Texas A&M. A member of the Ross Volunteers and a battalion commander in the Corps of Cadets, he graduated in 1953.

The longtime Dow Chemical employee also served as mayor of Lake Jackson, Texas.

A city spokesperson said the family had informed them of a memorial service set for Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church in College Station.

The family has asked that donations be made to causes of the donors' choosing, adding that Birdwell's favorite was the A&M Corps of Cadets.
