Wrong Way Crash

  • Hwy 290/Grand Pkwy in Cypress
  • 2:30 a.m. Sunday
  • Killed: Jon Fontana
  • Injured Aggies: Denise Martin, Scott Baumgarten, Sarah Lemay, Franklin Kingsley

CYPRESS - Four Texas A&M students, returning from Spring Break, survive a head-on crash with a wrong-way driver.

According to KHOU, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office says Jon Fontana was headed east in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 290. About 2:30 a.m. Sunday, his Toyota Camry collided head-on with a Jeep Liberty near the Grand Parkway exit in Cypress.

Fontana was pronounced dead at the scene. Denise Martin, the driver of the Jeep Liberty, and her passengers, Scott Baumgarten, Sarah Lemay and Franklin Kingsley, were all taken to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center.

A friend and classmate of the injured Aggies tells News 3 that two of them, Scott and Kingsley, are in the ICU. Scott’s injuries appear to be the most severe. He suffered multiple broken bones in the crash – femur, tibia, fibula and wrist. Kingsley has undergone two surgeries for a ruptured colon. Sarah has a broken neck and leg, but doctors do not believe there is a risk of paralysis. Denise has undergone surgery for a broken femur.

Deputy Matthew Dunn says they got one call about the wrong way driver before the crash. The Sheriff’s Office is not sure why Fontana was driving the wrong way or how long he had been doing so.

The accident happened about 20 miles east of where two Aggie cadets were killed in an eerily similar crash last March.

On March 3, 2013, a woman in a Ford Mustang collided with a Ford Explorer at 3:30 a.m. on Highway 290 near Binford Road in Waller. Miguel Hernandez and another freshman cadet, Amy Pacheco, were killed. A third cadet, Francisco Campos, was injured.

The driver of the Mustang, Katie Thomas, was pronounced dead at the scene.
