HUNTSVILLE — A Huntsville High School student seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident a month ago passed away at a Houston-area hospital on New Year’s Day.

Jami LeAnn Chatham, 17, died at Memorial Hermann Medical Center on Tuesday as a result of a severe head injury she suffered when she fell out of the back of a truck and hit the pavement while it was turning into the parking lot of a business in the 2500 block of Sam Houston Avenue in the early morning hours of Dec. 2.

A funeral service was scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Pace-Stancil Chapel.

Chatham and another female HHS student were injured in the accident when they were ejected from the bed of a truck being driven by 17-year-old Bryson O’Brien. O’Brien has been charged with two counts of intoxicated assault. As of Wednesday, the charges have not been enhanced, and the case will be turned over to the Walker County District Attorney’s Office.
