Celia Sandys, the granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill and internationally acclaimed author, journalist and television presenter, was the featured speaker Thursday night at an event at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center at the George Bush Presidential Library Center.
Sandys presented "Memories of My Grandfather, Winston Churchill," as part of the William Waldo Cameron Forum on Public Affairs sponsored by the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation. The lecture gave a unique glimpse into his personal and political life.
During a media briefing, prior to the lecture, Sandys talked about her grandfather and how she'd like him to be remembered.
"He had a lot of qualities and faults like all the rest of us and basically the thing was he believed in himself and I think it is terribly important for us all, that we should believe in ourselves," Sandys said.
Friday she will present "The Power of Words: The Inspiring Leadership of Winston Churchill," at 10:30 a.m. in Rudder Auditorium.
This lecture on Churchill's leadership will include photographs, video and audio recordings from key moments in his life, allowing the audience to hear in Churchill's own voice the inspiring words that helped him lead England through some of its darkest hours.
This lecture is a "Community of Scholars" event, presented by Texas A&M's Office of the Provost and Texas A&M University Press. This lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available from the MSC Box Office. Community of Scholars events are presented throughout the year by the Office of the Provost in collaboration with partner organizations to provide a forum for faculty, staff and students to come together as a "community of scholars."
Texas A&M University Press has just released new editions of two of Sandys' books: Churchill Wanted Dead or Alive and From Winston, With Love and Kisses. Those books will be available for purchase at both lectures and may also be ordered online at tamupress.com.
