Stanley Griffin has been sent to Texas' Death Row.
The 47-year-old was released from confinement in Brazos County Jail Monday to be taken to the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, nearly three days since he was sentenced to death for the 2010 murder of Jennifer Hailey in College Station.
He had been behind bars locally since his arrest on September 20, 2010, the day after the crime.
Griffin was convicted of capital murder June 20 in a Brazos County courtroom, then learned his fate last Friday. He stayed in the jail in Bryan until the Texas Department of Criminal Justice gave the sheriff's office the go-ahead to take him to his new home.
With his arrival, Griffin becomes the fourth person on Death Row who committed crimes in Brazos County. Last week, Christian Olsen was removed because his punishment was overturned by an appeals court. Now back in the Brazos County jail, he awaits word from the District Attorney's Office as to whether they will pursue a new punishment phase or allow him to receive life in prison without parole instead.
Marcus Druery is due to die August 1 for a 2002 murder. He was in Bryan starting Thursday for a Friday hearing at the Brazos County Courthouse. He was returned to the Polunsky Unit Monday morning, separate of Griffin.
Carl Blue and John Thuesen are the other Death Row inmates from Brazos County. Blue has no execution date set. Thuesen is currently in the midst of an automatic appeal granted to all defendants who received a death sentence.
