An inmate in Grimes County has died while in custody.
Anthony McCray was unresponsive when jail staff found him in his bunk just before 5:30 a.m.Thursday, according to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office. An inmate had alerted staff that McCray had "made an abnormal sound and seemed to be in some type of distress."
Those at the jail tried to aid McCray and he was eventually transported to the St. Joseph facility in Navasota, but he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be conducted, but authorities say there are no signs this was anything other than a medical issue.
McCray had been in the jail since June 20 on a delivery of a controlled substance charge.
