Helicopter Flying Around B/CS Saturday Surveying For BTU

Updated: Sun 7:01 AM, Jun 03, 2012

A low-flying helicopter could be seen around B/CS Saturday taking surveys for BTU.

The helicopter flew in from the Houston area Saturday morning and collected aerial data around Villa Maria and Briarcrest as well as west Bryan, Wellborn and Millican communities.

The information will help BTU evaluate the conditions of existing lines and also evaluate areas for future power distribution.

"Today we have a pod that's equipped with a lidar which is a laser scanner. And we have a digital camera that runs along side of it and collects color imagery and infrared imagery and what we're doing today is surveying power lines," said Benjamin Kirsch, a flight systems operator for Aerial Cartographics of America, based in Orlando, FL.

Laser technology enables them to measure the sag of the power lines to tell what needs to be replaced, while images are used for mapping the power corridor.
