The Texas House has approved a bill allowing students with proper licenses to keep guns in their cars on college campuses.

Passed by a voice vote Wednesday night, the measure was previously approved 27-4 in the state Senate last week. It still must clear a final, procedural hurdle in the House.

The bill sparked more debate in the upper chamber and passed only after Democrats received assurances it wouldn't be expanded to allowing carrying guns on campus. But a separate measure permitting that was approved in the House last weekend.

Under current law, universities can post a sign prohibiting guns like any private property owner. The bill would override that.

Supporters noted that it simply extends to students a right faculty and staff members, and others on campus. already have.
