17 storage units were broken into in south College Station, just off Highway 6 and Deacon Drive between Friday and Monday.

Police say they're still compiling lists of all the items stolen from the SecurCare Self Storage facility.

Shane Huggins, with College Station Pawn, says TV shows like Storage Wars and Pawn Stars are bringing more people in to do business.

Huggins said, "I have people, occassionally, that say well, I know how this works, I've seen the TV shows."

With shows popping up and grabbing people's interest, more items are appearing in pawn shops, but before you can get paid for that laptop, shop owners have to figure out where it came from.

"The customer has to have a valid ID and we get all their information, and a copy of that goes to the police station, which they pick up about once a week," Huggins said.

Items stolen from 17 storage units in south College Station will most likely end up on pawn shop counters...and that's why state law requires them to hold items for 20 days before they can sell them.

"It happens more than we like," said Huggins. "If they have no idea what the value is and they don't know how to work it, they can't test it out for me, most likely, it's something I'm not going to take.

Disc locks work best when it comes to securing your property...and an extra set of eyes helps too.

Huggins said, "You never know what's going to come in through the door."

In case something of yours is brought in, having the serial number on record, will make sure you get it back.

SecurCare Self Storage has four locations in College Station.
According to police, the last break-in at the south Highway 6 location, which does not have security cameras, was in March.
