The City of College Station is elevating an assistant fire chief who also serves as the city's fire marshal to the interim chief position.
City officials announced that Eric Hurt will begin as the interim fire chief beginning Monday.
Current Chief R.B. Alley announced his retirement earlier this month.
Hurt joined the College Station Fire Department in 1981 as a 19-year-old. He has been an assistant chief since 1995, having served as assistant chief of operations and his current role as assistant chief of the fire prevention and life safety division.
Alley's official last day is June 28.
The city's search for the next new chief is getting underway. Interim City Manager Kathy Merrill says internal candidates will be considered.
