Aggies are working make sure the legacy of a fallen football player is carried on through a scholarship in his name.
A fund for Joey Villavisencio has now been endowed through the A&M Foundation after reaching the $25,000 mark Monday morning.
One year ago this coming Saturday, Texas A&M football players were preparing for a bowl game. December 22 was one of the last practices for the seniors on the team, including Villavisencio, a senior offensive lineman from Jacksonville, Texas majoring in radiological health engineering.
Villavisencio was among the Aggie players who helped brighten the days of kids and families in need of some holiday cheer. The team gave gifts to them the afternoon of the 22nd through Twin City Mission in Bryan.
Just a few hours later, the 22-year-old was travelling home for Christmas when he crashed on Highway 39 near Normangee and died.
Fellow players, his coaches and Aggie Athletics staff remembered him for his service, generosity, and respectful, hard-working attitude.
It had been a while since "Joey V's" name had been mentioned until recently, though surely, he had been on many minds as the anniversary of his passing approached.
Earlier this month, Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel devoted a good portion of his acceptance speech to his teammate. He ended it by saying, "And to Mr. and Mrs. Villavisencio, if I had a son I would want him to be exactly like him. I know Joey is in a better place."
More donations for the scholarship fund are welcomed. Go to the Foundation's website, then click on the "Give Now" icon.
