John David Crow Honored With Statue

Updated: Wed 4:23 PM, Jul 13, 2011

He's a living legend and today Texas A&M's only Heisman trophy winner was honored.

John David Crow won the trophy back in 1957. Today, the university unveiled a larger than life statue to honor Crow.

Former teammates, University officials and fans alike turned out for the ceremony. The statue took sculptor Steven Whyte over a year to design and create. It was donated as a gift to the Aggie athletic department from Erle Nye.

"I'm not bright enough, smart enough to express my feelings on something like this," expressed Crow.

"I don't think that many people are and then unveiling the statue was just unbelievable. It's unbelievable."

After the ceremony, Crow and his former teammates posed for a picture in front of the statue. Some athletic department officials remarked it was a historic moment to have so many former player in one place.

Crow played at A&M under legendary coach Bear Bryant in 1957 when he won the Heisman. Coach Bryant was quoted saying if they don't give the Heisman to John David, they ought to stop giving it.

Crow has agreed to serve as honorary captain on Saturday's game when the Aggies take on Missouri.
