BRYAN- The College Station Kiwanis Club hosted their 62nd annual Pancake Day at the Brazos Center on Saturday. Sponsors say they made enough pancakes to fed between 800 and 1,000 people using their famous World War 1-era griddle.
"It's just really heart warming...nowadays kids are different. We have so many in this club that want to give back and I mean they're here today cleaning up tables and they think it's the greatest thing in the world," said Sponsor of K-Kids at Henderson Elementary Amy Toland.
"The Kiwanis club as a whole is a group of volunteers that focus on children so all of our projects are directed...to kids. I've got young children, it really spoke to me, and it was an organization that I wanted to be a part of," said President-Elect of BCS Kiwanis Shana Elliott.
One of the aims of Kiwanis to recruit new members is to grow volunteers from a young age.
Karen Rossman, also a K-Kids sponsor at Henderson Elementary, said that kids can start volunteering at a young age and metriculate through the different Kiwanis programs designed for their increasing age levels.
"It's probably the funnest [sic] thing that I do in my high school career and I'll be continuing it on through my whole entire life," Lt. Governor, Division 9 West, for BCS Kiwanis Kimberly Bosquez said.
Today's event featured fire truck tours and a safety house demonstration from the Bryan Fire Department. Also available were crafts, games, and hair dying.
All the proceeds from the event will go to the Kiwanis Club's efforts to eliminate Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus in some of the poorest countries around the world.
