It will be five years on Labor Day when Bryan resident Glenn Highfill nearly lost his life in a motorcycle accident. Highfill was out of state traveling back to Bryan when it started raining. He stopped under a bridge and shortly after, he says he was hit from behind by a pickup truck who lost control underneath the overpass. He was pinned in between that pick-up and another vehicle. As a result of his injuries, Highfill’s left leg was amputated.
After two years of surgery, physical therapy and rehab, Highfill learned to walk again. And during that time he says “Left Leg Memorial” was born.
"My first tournament three years ago, I think I had 44 players; last year was 55; and right now I have 60 players," said Highfill. "If I could have 72 players fill up all 18 holes this year that would be incredible."
Left Leg Memorial is an annual golf tournament held at the Pecan Lakes Golf Club in Navasota. All of the proceeds help Highfill purchase electric wheelchairs to those in need. In the last three years Highfill has donated 14 wheelchairs and one wheelchair lift. In 2011 five electric wheelchairs were purchased and donated as well as one wheelchair lift.
“I’ve given them away from here to Bremond to Hempstead,” said Highfill. “Emotionally, physically, spiritually, without my faith I wouldn’t be here today, but it’s just a great feeling. I know how I felt when I had so many people do things for me.”
Registration is $100 and golfers will be supplied with food, refreshments and prizes.
“This year Wings n’ More is bringing their catering truck to serve wings and chicken tenders for the whole tournament,” Highfill said. “If it continues to grow and grow then I’ll be able to save and hopefully give away a prosthetic leg. That's my goal, because they’re not cheap.”
