Lifeguard Training Courses
Beginning Thursday, March 15 Bryan Parks and Recreation will host Lifeguard Certification Courses at the Bryan Aquatic Center. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses will teach lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The courses will include Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid.
Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive three American Red Cross Universal Certificates - indicating Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for lifeguards that are valid for two years.
In order to register for one of the courses, participants must be at least 15 years of age by the end of the class, and they must pass two pre-course swimming skills tests. Participants must be able to swim continuously for 300 yards and they must also tread water for two minutes, only using their legs. Candidates must either hold their hands out of the water or place them under their arm pits during the tread test. Candidates must also complete a timed swimming scenario. In the scenario, participants must swim 20 yards, retrieve a10 pound brick from 10 foot depth, swim back 20 yards, and climb out of pool without using a ladder or steps in 1 minute 40 seconds or less.
The cost for the certification course is $150 for Bryan residents and $165 for non-residents, and must be paid in full at registration. Participants can register at the Bryan Aquatic Center (3100 Oakridge Dr.) or call 209-5222. All of the courses will last 4 days, meeting Thursdays and Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The six different course dates are posted below:
March 15-18, April 12-15, May 3-6, May 10-13, May 17-20, May 24-27
Lifeguard Challenge Classes
If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard or want to see if you have what it takes to get the job done, this class if for you! The Lifeguard Challenge Class is a 45 minute workout consisting of swimming, treading water, and retrieving objects from a depth of 10 feet underwater.
This class is designed to help those who might need to strengthen their lifeguard skills, but also challenge anyone who wants to see if they have what it takes. Participants will receive a credit for their payment for the Challenge Class toward the Lifeguard Training Course also offered by Bryan Parks and Recreation.
The cost to attend a Lifeguard Challenge Class is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. Participants can register at the Bryan Aquatic Center (3100 Oakridge Dr.) or call 209-5222. Challenge Classes are offered each Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. during the week that each Lifeguard Training Course is offered. The six different class dates are posted below:
