(Press Release) The City of College Station’s Lincoln Recreation Center will mark Juneteenth 2012 with a number of events.

Uniquely Texan, Juneteenth is now recognized and commemorated across the United States and around the world, marking the emancipation of African American slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth has been an official Texas state holiday since 1980.

Thursday, June 14
At 9 a.m., the annual Freedom Walk (1.82 miles) begins at the Lincoln Recreation Center and ends at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

The LRC’s Fabtacular Summer Day Camp participants (ages 6-16) will take part in the Freedom Walk and hear from story-teller Alafia Gaidi about Freedom’s Legacy: Africa’s Gifts to Texas.

Friday, June 15
At 5:30 p.m., Carnival Night offers plenty of family fun and activities, plus the official opening of the LRC’s splash park.

Sunday, June 17
Beginning at 6 p.m., relax outside the LRC and enjoy jazz, blues and R&B from local band Golden Groove.

Monday, June 18
At 7 p.m. at the W.A. Tarrow Park pavilion, be part of an evening of tributes and heavenly voices.
All events are free of charge, and the entire community is welcome.

Special thanks to College Station Parks & Recreation, The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and the many African American organizations and youth development agencies contributing to the Juneteenth 2012 events.
