Thousands of dollars were raised today in downtown Bryan for citizens of West, Texas to rebuild their lives after the fertilizer plant explosion.

A benefit concert called ‘Fest for West’ took place at the Palace Theater from noon until 8 p.m. More than one hundred volunteers spent hours putting the event together.

"I think it's kind of a Texas thing where we want to help out our neighbor. You know, West is just down the road and we have a lot of community members with direct ties to West...and it seemed like this is what we need to do," said Rene Lawrence, Interim Director of the Downtown Bryan Association.

Barbara Peevey is a part owner of Brazos Glassworks in downtown Bryan, but her family is from West. She says members of her family were injured and several lost their homes in the blast.

"On every street there's relatives, so everybody was affected one way or another," said Peevey.

More than a dozen bands donated their time to support the people of West.

Organizers say all proceeds of tickets, food & alcohol sales will go to benefit the people of West, Texas.

While every dollar counts for the people who lost everything in the explosion, it was the show of support in downtown Bryan that moved Barbara Peevey and her family the most.

"It's hard to realize that there are people who will do this for their fellow neighbors, which I think is fantastic," said Peevey.

There's still a way to donate to the victims in West if you didn't get a chance to stop by the benefit. The Brazos Valley Media Gives Back Fund is accepting donations. You can donate at The Bank & Trust locations, or you can donate online through pay-pal.
