Local Good Samaritan Receives Surprise Rewards For Saving Trapped Driver

College Station, TX A local Good Samaritan received a surprise Tuesday after rescuing a Texas A&M student from her burning car in Bryan this May.

News 3 spoke with Felix Chester, who still doesn't believe he was a hero that day.

"I can't tell you what was going through my mind at the time. I just knew that someone in that vehicle needed help and they needed it right away," said Felix Chester.

Felix Chester doesn't call himself a hero, but a roomful of people at the College Station Kiwanis Club would probably disagree.

Tuesday afternoon the Texas A&M Utilities and Energy Employee was recognized and rewarded for helping rescue 20-year-old A&M Student Niki Elvir from her burning SUV on Highway 47.

"He doesn't consider himself a hero, but on May 6, of 2013 he was our daughter's guardian angel and we'll never forget him," said Stacy Elvir," Niki Elvir's Mother.

Niki Elvir was on her way to babysit when the wreck happened.

That left her with a broken knee, elbow and a crushed foot.

But she's grateful to be alive.

"My windows wouldn't roll up, so, I couldn't get outside. So I remember screaming someone help and then I just remember him coming and just pulling me out," she said.

Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp's office had a surprise too.

"He wants you and your wife to join him in his suite for the September 7 football game," said Phillip Ray, Chief Business Development Officer for the Texas A&M System.

He and his wife also received $250 from the Kiwanis Club for a relaxing weekend, free nights at a hotel, a flag being flown in his honor over the U.S. Capitol and city recognition too, with College Station Mayor Nancy Berry declaring it Felix Chester Day.

"She will always be in our prayers... And just hope now she graduates. She has very loving parents, so I mean it's a good ending all the way around," said Felix Chester.

An ending that's forged a very special friendship.

Niki Elvir will return to Texas A&M this fall.

She should finish her physical therapy in September and will be able to start walking again soon.
