TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY Representatives from Texas A&M, Bryan, College Station and Brazos County came together Thursday to make a Kyle Field expansion agreement official.
"We are integrally bound together - Texas A&M University, the City of College Station, the City of Bryan and Brazos County - nothing one of us does doesn't affect the other," said A&M President R. Bowen Loftin.
The agreement, signed at the Zone in Kyle Field, says that the local governments will help foot the $450 million renovation bill through hotel occupancy tax revenue. In exchange, the governments will get preferred access to A&M facilities.
"This is the first time that anything like this has happened with a state university and a community," said Shannon Overby, executive director of the Bryan/College Station Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Overby says it's a win-win situation for everyone. Now, groups will have access to several on campus venues at a discounted price. The list of spaces includes The Zone, MSC, Rudder Tower, the Penberthy Sports Complex, Reed Arena, and Kyle Field - facilities that were too expensive for some organizations before.
"The prices are either free, or the lowest rate of which students would pay, so it is the lowest rate available," said Overby.
Overby says booking events on campus will bring in more visitors, who will spend money at local hotels and businesses.
The agreement officially goes into affect September 1, but signs of the changes to come can already be seen as G. Rollie White Coliseum is demolished to make room for the expansion of Kyle Field.
Officials describe the agreement as the start of a new era for the Texas A&M community.
